Audiomania expert verdict

The Rega Planar 1 is Rega’s most affordable deck and the archetypal first hi-fi turntable: the RB110 arm and Rega Carbon cartridge come factory-set, installation takes minutes and owners call the sound worthy even with the stock cartridge. The price is austerity: manual speed change, no phono stage, auto-stop or ground terminal, a fixed cable, and cartridge upgrades limited by mass and the 3-screw mount. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • a first proper turntable: assembled and set up at the factory, installation takes minutes AI draft, under review
  • listeners who want honest British hi-fi sound without extras — no USB, Bluetooth or built-in phono stage AI draft, under review
  • systems with an amplifier that has a PHONO input (Yamaha A-S301, Denon PMA-720/800) or an external phono stage such as the Rega Fono Mini A2D AI draft, under review
  • owners ready to move to a better cartridge later (Rega Bias 2 / Elys 2, Audio-Technica VM530EN) — the sound “goes up a level” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • no phono stage: you need a PHONO input on the amp/receiver or an external unit; the Planar 1 Plus has one built in AI draft, under review
  • 33/45 speed is changed by moving the belt by hand — owners call it the main inconvenience AI draft, under review
  • no auto-stop or auto-lift; the interconnect is fixed and there is no ground terminal AI draft, under review
  • cartridge upgrades are limited: Rega 3-screw mount, no adjustable anti-skate, replacements only of the same mass (~5 g) and height AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • RB110 tonearm

What it is: A 9-inch straight aluminium arm with precision bearings to Rega’s spec, an integrated headshell and automatic anti-skate; the Rega Carbon cartridge is fitted at the factory.

Practical benefit: Needs no setting up: owners are listening within minutes; the flip side is no adjustable anti-skate, so cartridge swaps are limited. AI draft, under review

  • Phenolic platter, sub-platter and bronze bearing

    What it is: A 23 mm phenolic-resin platter (≈620 g) rides on a sub-platter with a precision bronze bearing.

Practical benefit: Platter mass gives inertia for stable rotation, the bearing a quiet run; the Planar 2 glass platter fits as an upgrade. AI draft, under review

  • EBLT belt and 24 V synchronous motor

What it is: A custom low-noise 24 V AC synchronous motor with an aluminium pulley and Rega’s patented EBLT belt; 33/45 is changed by moving the belt.

Practical benefit: Low vibration and stable speed; the belt stretches over time and needs replacing (Rega RP1 Drive Belt). AI draft, under review

  • MDF plinth with acrylic laminate

What it is: An MDF chassis laminated with acrylic, matte black or white, on vibration-isolating feet.

Practical benefit: Vibration isolation of the structure and the clean look owners mention. AI draft, under review

  • Rega Carbon MM cartridge

What it is: The stock MM cartridge with a carbon cantilever and replaceable stylus, 2–3 g tracking force, ≈500 h stylus life.

Practical benefit: Enough to start (“worthy sound even with the stock cartridge”); a specialist calls it “primitive” — a Bias 2 sounds “significantly better”. AI draft, under review

FAQ

›Does the Rega Planar 1 need a separate phono stage?
Yes. “This model has no phono stage” — it must be external (specialists name the Rega Fono Mini A2D), built into the amplifier (PHONO input) or into active speakers. The Rega Planar 1 Plus has one built in.
›Which cartridge can replace the stock Rega Carbon?
“Only the stock one or a similar cartridge by mass and height” (~5 g): specialists named the Audio-Technica VM530EN, Rega Bias 2 / Elys 2 (no height change needed), Tonar E-Flip and, by mass and size, the Sumiko Moonstone; the Sumiko Pearl does not fit. Mind the 3-screw mount and the lack of anti-skate adjustment; the swap is free when the cartridge is bought with the deck.
›Can an MC cartridge be fitted?
Specialist: “The manufacturer itself does not recommend upgrading this model. Everything is set up and calculated for the stock cartridge only.” For an MC chain look at the Planar 3 or a Pro-Ject Debut with adjustable anti-skate.
›Can the stock RCA cable be replaced or extended?
The cable is built into the plinth; “replacement is not provided for” — and, per a specialist, not worthwhile: it has headroom even for a cartridge upgrade. If it is too short, Audiomania’s cable centre will make an extension (Klotz MY206SW + Bespeco plugs).
›Where is the ground terminal and what about hum?
There is no terminal: “Rega turntables, even the top models, have no grounding” — the arm ground runs through one channel and normally causes no hum. If you do get hum: do not place the deck above the amplifier (an owner cured hum by moving the amp a shelf down), isolate the system from the TV, fight static with an anti-static brush and normal humidity.
›Is there auto-stop or auto-lift?
No: “This model has no auto-stop or arm-lift at the end of a record” — lift the arm with the cue lever by hand when a side ends.
›Which slipmat can replace the stock one?
A thin one: “no more than 2 mm thick” (Audio Anatomy Leather / Cork Nitrile); another specialist suggests 1 mm rubber, leather or cork. With a 3 mm cork mat “the arm tilts up slightly” and the stylus angle goes wrong — there is no arm-height adjustment.
›How is 33/45 speed switched?
By hand — moving the belt from one pulley groove to the other. An owner: “it is inconvenient to keep moving the belt”. If the belt slips off and will not stay on — “most likely you need a new belt” (Rega RP1 Drive Belt).
›How long does the stylus last, and do you replace the stylus or the cartridge?
“The stylus is rated for roughly 500 hours.” The card lists the Rega Carbon with an “easily replaceable stylus” — a specialist named the compatible Audio-Technica AT91 stylus; another staff member said the whole cartridge is replaced. Check before ordering.
›Rega Planar 1 or Audio-Technica AT-LP120X USB?
On sound a specialist preferred the Rega (Plus version): “denser, more dynamic and more detail-focused than the AT-LP120”, but “not open to upgrades”. For features and upgrades the AT-LP120X is more interesting: direct drive with no belt, switchable phono stage, USB, detachable cable and headshell.
›Which amplifier suits the Planar 1?
Any amplifier with a PHONO input (e.g. Yamaha A-S301 — “connect to the sockets marked PHONO”). Specialists advise not to skimp: “at least a Denon PMA-800”; the 720/800 give “better control” than the PMA-520; the principle is “all components of the chain at one level”.

Audiomania expert opinion

Audiomania specialists describe the Planar 1 as a “balanced entry-level solution” — cartridge, arm and the rest of one class. For further upgrades it is “not optimal”: no anti-skate adjustment, and the maker designed everything around the stock cartridge; those planning upgrades are pointed to a Pro-Ject Debut or straight to the Planar 3. AI draft, under review[5]

On sound, a specialist said (of the Plus version with the same deck, arm and cartridge) that it is “denser, more dynamic and detail-focused” than the Audio-Technica AT-LP120X; owners write of a “comfortable”, “recognisably British” sound. AI draft, under review[3]
