Audiomania expert verdict

A class-AB integrated, 2 × 50 W (8 Ω) / 2 × 75 W (4 Ω) with 9 A peak current, four digital inputs on an ES9018K2M, an MM phono stage, aptX Bluetooth and a power-amp direct input. In Audiomania specialists' experience a neutral, composed amplifier for bookshelf speakers in 13–20 m² at moderate volume; for hard-to-drive Dynaudio/B&W and larger rooms take the 7000A. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • bookshelf speakers in 13–20 m² at low to medium volume: ELAC Carina / BS 312, Monitor Audio Silver 50 / Bronze 100, DALI Oberon 1, Radiotehnika Sigma 1.01 AI draft, under review
  • quiet evening listening — “balanced sound at any volume level” AI draft, under review
  • four digital inputs (2 optical + 2 coax) on an ES9018K2M DAC, an MM phono stage and aptX Bluetooth — every source without extra boxes AI draft, under review
  • a power amp for home-cinema fronts: the power-amp direct input from an AV receiver's pre-out (a real setup with Marantz NR1506 and ELAC UBR62) AI draft, under review
  • for purists: an analogue volume control, relay switching, no tone-control stage — “the same school” as the legendary 8000A AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • no tone controls — only three DAC filter presets; one buyer was surprised (“the recommendation didn't explain this”) AI draft, under review
  • moderate power reserve: for Dali Ikon 6, Dynaudio Emit 20 and B&W 707 S3 specialists advise the 7000A or something “a class higher and more dynamic” AI draft, under review
  • no dedicated sub output — via Pre-Out or at high level from the terminals (REL) AI draft, under review
  • USB is service-only, no HDMI, no network: a computer over optical/coax, the TV over optical AI draft, under review

08

Sound character

The delivery is calm and composed: a specialist notes “good delivery and bass control, excellent detail”; a buyer at a showroom audition — “calm, gentle sound, a legible stage”; another — “powerful, rich sound” on Rachmaninov and “the same school” as the 8000A. AI draft, under review[4]

Against its neighbours: the Rotel A11 Tribute is “the most detailed yet not harsh”, the 7000A “more dynamic, wider stage, more detailed”, the NAD C368 and Arcam SA10 give “tighter bass” — the 6000A stays the neutral middle, neither bright nor overly soft. AI draft, under review[4]

Use scenarios

Suits:

  • bookshelves in 13–20 m², not loud — neighbours included AI draft, under review
  • jazz, lounge, electronic, brit-pop on ELAC / Monitor Audio / DALI AI draft, under review
  • a power amp in a home cinema via the power-amp direct input AI draft, under review

Less suited to:

  • hard loads (Dynaudio Emit 20, B&W 707 S3, Dali Ikon 6) and big rooms — the 7000A AI draft, under review
  • metal with an emphasis on tight bass — a specialist preferred the NAD C368 / Arcam SA10 AI draft, under review
  • TV over HDMI and network streaming — neither HDMI nor network AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • Class A/B, discrete CFB stages

What it is: Class-A/B output stages on separate boards per channel, discrete components, CFB (complementary feedback) topology.

Practical benefit: Thermal stability and linearity; a buyer: “the same school” as the 8000A.

  • 200 W toroid, 9 A peak current

What it is: A 200 W toroidal power supply; up to 9 A peak current; 60,000 µF of filtering (review).

Practical benefit: A good current reserve (75/50 = 1.5): bookshelf impedance dips are no problem; for hard Dynaudio Emit 20 still not enough.

  • ES9018K2M DAC with three filters

What it is: Four digital inputs (2 optical, 2 coax) on an ES9018K2M, up to 24-bit/192 kHz; Fast / Slow / Phase filters.

Practical benefit: TV, CD transport and computer digitally; the filters are the only sound “tuning” (no tone controls).

  • Analogue volume and relay switching

What it is: An analogue volume control in 1/2 dB steps over −80…+8 dB; relay-switched analogue inputs.

Practical benefit: A short signal path; the dB readout “counts down as you turn up” (review).

  • Pre-out and power-amp direct input

What it is: A preamp output and a power-amp direct input; 12 V trigger in and out.

Practical benefit: A power amp for the fronts from an AV receiver (a real Marantz NR1506 setup) or an external power amp.

  • MM phono stage

What it is: A built-in MM phono stage, S/N over 76 dB (A).

Practical benefit: A turntable with an MM cartridge (Audio-Technica AT-LPW50PB — a real pairing) directly.

  • aptX Bluetooth

What it is: Bluetooth reception with the aptX codec.

Practical benefit: “A nice bonus of aptX support” (review); no transmission to headphones.

  • 2.35 Ω headphone output

What it is: A headphone output with 2.35 Ω impedance; a dedicated amplifier stage (review).

Practical benefit: Low output impedance — correct behaviour with low-impedance headphones too.

FAQ

›Are there tone controls?
“There is no tone control, only digital filters” — three DAC presets (Fast, Slow, Phase); “individual frequencies cannot be adjusted” (specialist).
›What do filters 1/2/3 change and which should I pick?
They are DAC filters: Fast — flat response with a steep roll-off above Fs/2; Slow — an earlier, gentler roll-off; Phase — a gentle minimum-phase roll-off. “Try all three to find your preference” (specialist).
›6000A or 7000A for DALI Oberon 1?
“The difference is not only power — the AudioLab 7000 sounds more dynamic, with a wider stage and better detail” (specialist). For Oberon 1 in a small room the 6000A “fits without issues, a very good amplifier in its class”.
›6000A, Rotel A11 Tribute or Denon PMA-600NE for ELAC DBR62, jazz and lounge in 20 m²?
Specialist: “definitely the Rotel A11 Tribute as the most detailed yet not harsh — it pairs organically with the ELAC Debut Reference DBR62”. Another specialist: the 6000A and Rotel are “in the same class, the difference is the digital inputs” (the 6000A has four); a Bluetooth alternative is the Leak Stereo 130.
›Which bookshelf speakers for the 6000A?
Specialists: ELAC BS 312 (“balanced sound at any volume”, 17–18 m², quiet); under 80k — Monitor Audio Silver 50 7G; for lounge and EDM at low volume — ELAC Carina BS 243.4 (“brighter midrange”) or B&W 707 S3; DALI Oberon 1 in 13 m² — “no problem”. Dynaudio Emit 20 “will not open up”.
›Is the 6000A enough for Dali Ikon 6 instead of a Cambridge Azur 640A at low volume?
Specialist: “for your speakers the AudioLab 6000A will be a bit weak — look at the 7000A”; it is “less powerful than the Cambridge Azur 640A, you will lose dynamics and have to turn it up more”. By rule §4.9.17, 100 dB peaks at 3 m need speakers of 89.6 dB/W or more.
›How do I connect a subwoofer without a Sub Out?
Via Pre-Out (low level) or at high level from the speaker terminals — bananas for the speakers plus the REL sub's wires at once: “yes, you can do that” (specialist).
›Can the 6000A be a power amp for home-cinema fronts, and which interconnect?
Yes — via the power-amp direct input from an AV receiver's pre-out (a real setup: Marantz NR1506 + ELAC UBR62). For the interconnect specialists recommended “proven solutions... Van den Hul The Name and AudioQuest Golden Gate”.
›What is the current firmware version?
“On the manufacturer's site it is called V0.33ST_V0.34GD; the archive includes instructions on which variant applies to your unit” (specialist, November 2025).
›Will it suit Radiotehnika Sigma 1.01 (16 m², blues/rock, loud)?
Yes: in the RTM01 thread a specialist called the 6000A “a higher-level amplifier” that “will take the speakers to an even higher level” — class AB, 2 × 50 W into 8 Ω with the 8 Ω Sigma 1.01 bookshelf.
›Can I connect a centre channel?
No: a stereo amplifier drives two channels; multichannel cinema needs an AV receiver.

Apple Music.

Audiomania expert opinion

The 6000A is the amplifier “a manager recommends so the speakers are driven in moderation”: specialists pair it with ELAC, Monitor Audio, DALI Oberon 1 and the Sigma 1.01 and praise its “good delivery, bass control and excellent detail” at low to medium volume. A buyer comparing it in the showroom with a Hegel H190 and a Roksan Attessa chose it for its “calm, gentle sound”. AI draft, under review[4]

The limits are honest: against a Cambridge Azur 640A “you lose dynamics”, Dynaudio Emit 20 “will not open up”, and the 7000A “sounds more dynamic, with a wider stage and better detail”. There are no tone controls — only DAC filters — and it is worth knowing in advance. AI draft, under review[4]
