Audiomania expert verdict

A large two-way bookshelf with a 20 cm Polyglass driver and a titanium tweeter: floorstander-like 42 Hz (−3 dB) bass and an energetic, “lively” delivery — for rock, hard rock and metal “without mush”. 8 Ω, an easy load: works with RTM01/RTM02 and Premiera A2/A3, opens up with an Audiolab 6000A. Rooms of 13–25 m², on stands; the ±2 dB treble switch tunes it to the room. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • rock, hard rock and metal “without mush” — a specialist calls it excellent for dense genres AI draft, under review
  • deep, dense bass for a bookshelf: 42 Hz (−3 dB) from a 20 cm Polyglass driver AI draft, under review
  • rooms of 13–25 m² — from 13 m² (front port) up to 25 m² “fills it completely” AI draft, under review
  • an easy 8 Ω load: comes alive already with Radiotehnika RTM01/RTM02 and Premiera A2/A3 AI draft, under review
  • ±2 dB treble trim for the room and your hearing — “the slight treble lift is a lifesaver for me” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • plenty of bass: one owner tames it with tone controls, “demanding on placement” — use stands, not a niche AI draft, under review
  • the titanium tweeter does not forgive bright recordings — the “−” switch position helps AI draft, under review
  • at low volume bass control depends on the amplifier (a Denon PMA-600 “may not cope”) AI draft, under review
  • a large bookshelf, 47.5 × 28 × 29.7 cm, 13.5 kg — needs 58–68 cm stands AI draft, under review

Sound character

The Sigma 1.01's character is “lively speakers for lively music”: an energetic delivery and fast, plentiful bass from the 20 cm long-throw Polyglass driver. AI draft, under review[3]

Bass is deep for a bookshelf (42 Hz at −3 dB) and fast: “in the lows the Sigma 1.01 is faster and bassier”, “no worse in speed” than Klipsch floorstanders; for one owner there is even “too much” of it. AI draft, under review[4]

The midrange is delivered “softly, comfortably, hiding no detail” (Stereo.ru); a specialist: “better in midrange delivery” than the Klipsch R-600F. AI draft, under review[2]

Treble — a titanium dome in a waveguide: “transparent on top”, but sharp-ish on bright recordings — Stereo.ru recommends the “−” position. Less detail and air than studio active monitors. AI draft, under review[3]

It does not fall apart in dense genres: “handles metal and hard rock excellently, without mush, without excess sibilance”. AI draft, under review[1]

Technologies and construction

  • 20 cm long-throw Polyglass mid/woofer

What it is: A Polyglass composite cone (paper with a glass coating), long excursion; one driver covers bass and midrange.

Practical benefit: “Balanced midrange and confident bass”; “keeps control and articulation in dynamic passages” — specialist: “faster and bassier”.

  • 25.4 mm titanium tweeter in a waveguide

What it is: A 25.4 mm titanium dome; waveguide with a phase plug.

Practical benefit: “Clarity and transparency”, “precision and detail” — Stereo.ru: “transparent on top”, but on bright recordings “will not spare your ears”.

  • ±2 dB treble level switch

What it is: A ±2 dB tweeter level switch.

Practical benefit: Tuning to the room and your hearing: “works noticeably but gently” (Stereo.ru); an owner with reduced HF hearing: “the slight treble lift is a lifesaver for me”.

  • Front-firing reflex port

What it is: A reflex cabinet; the port fires forward (per a specialist; not stated in the table).

Practical benefit: Less dependence on the distance to the rear wall — “not so fussy about placement”.

  • Up-to-21 mm MDF cabinet with internal bracing

What it is: MDF walls up to 21 mm thick with internal partitions; Black Ash finish.

Practical benefit: Lower resonance — “structural stability” and a clean sound picture (description).

  • The front port and the treble switch help “fine-tune the sound to the room” — put them on 58–68 cm stands, not in a closed niche.[2]
  • Plenty of bass: one owner trims it with tone controls and calls the model “demanding on placement” — keep it out of corners.[1]

FAQ

›Which amplifier for a 14–16 m² room?
An Audiomania specialist: 8 Ω and high sensitivity — “suits a wide range of amplifiers, e.g. the Radiotehnika RTM02. The best option is the Premiera A3, also consider the Audiolab 6000A”. Premiera A1/A1VU/A2 “pair well” but will not unlock the full potential; of those, the A2.
›Will the Radiotehnika RTM01 drive it in 16 m² (rock, blues, louder than average)?
Yes: “the amplifier will open the speakers up in your conditions — a detailed, spacious sound”. To “get the maximum” — the Audiolab 6000A (class AB).
›How does it handle metal — from Aria to Slayer and Death?
“Handles metal and hard rock excellently, without mush, without excess sibilance. The Premiera A3 is an excellent amplifier for it” (specialist, 2026-01-25, 20 m² room).
›Sigma 1.01 or Klipsch RP-600M II for 13 m² at 2 m (rock, metal, Aiyima A07 Pro)?
The specialist recommends the Sigma 1.01: “it has a front port and a ±2 dB treble control, which helps fine-tune the sound to the room”. 13 m² is the lower part of the 10–35 m² rule range.
›Will it work properly with an old Yamaha AV receiver?
Yes: “the speakers are 8 Ω, it will work correctly” (specialist). By rule the load is easy (1/10); a receiver rated for 8 Ω is fine.
›How does it play quietly — will quality drop, will there be too much or too little bass?
Specialist: with a Denon PMA-600 “the amplifier is not the most powerful and may not cope with bass control at low volume” — the result depends on the amplifier. This model has plenty of bass (an owner trims it with tone controls), so at low volume it will stay rather than vanish.
›Which amplifier with a USB input (for a computer)?
Specialist: Leak Stereo 130; cheaper — Premiera A1S: “per reviews and our tests… has enough power reserve for various speakers, e.g. the Radiotehnika Sigma 1.01”.
›At what level is the 42 Hz lower limit specified?
“Minus 3 dB” (Audiomania specialist, 2025-11-12) — as stated in the first row of the table: 42–25 000 Hz (−3 dB).
›Which stands does it need?
By rule a 58–68 cm stand (tweeter at 95–105 cm seated): the Radiotehnika T6 (66 cm) fits. Top plate at least 17 × 18 cm. Specialist: “quite large bookshelves” — 13.5 kg each.
›How does it differ from the floorstanding Sigma 1.02?
“Only in bass depth — the character is identical” (Audiomania blog): the same 20 cm Polyglass driver, titanium tweeter and treble switch. The 1.01 has one woofer, 8 Ω, 25–125 W and needs stands; the 1.02 has two woofers, 6 Ω and suits 18–35 m². AI draft, under review
›Does it need an amplifier?
Yes: these are passive speakers and need a stereo amplifier or receiver. See “Amplifier requirements” and “Recommended now”.

Audiomania expert opinion

The Sigma 1.01 is the bookshelf version of the Sigma 1.02: per the Audiomania blog “they differ only in bass depth, the character is identical”. Specialists call it “faster and bassier”, “more dynamic” than the KLH Model 3 and note it handles metal and hard rock “without mush, without excess sibilance”. AI draft, under review[4]

Stereo.ru hears a sound “transparent on top, warm”, but warns that the titanium tweeters “will not spare your ears” on bright recordings — the “−2 dB” switch fixes that. If maximum detail and treble clarity matter most, a specialist honestly notes that the active Swan D200 is ahead there. AI draft, under review[3]
