Audiomania expert verdict

Denon's network integrated with AHC output stages (50 W/8 Ω, 85 W/4 Ω), an MM/MC phono stage and the HEOS platform — for anyone who wants one box for streaming, vinyl and the TV in a 12–25 m² room. Dynamic with weighty bass; it is no Leak 230 in grip, and Russian services must go over AirPlay or Bluetooth. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • streaming out of the box: HEOS, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready, internet radio over Wi-Fi/Ethernet — no separate streamer needed AI draft, under review
  • vinyl: a built-in phono stage for both MM and MC (0.2 mV / 100 Ω) AI draft, under review
  • a dynamic sound with weighty bass and good control of bookshelf and modest floorstanding speakers in 12–25 m² AI draft, under review
  • three optical inputs plus coaxial — TV, CD transport and set-top box without an external DAC AI draft, under review
  • an upgrade from an AV receiver or the PMA-600: “tighter, more detailed, more alive” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • HEOS has no Russian services and there is no Chromecast: Yandex Music goes via AirPlay 2 (Apple) or Bluetooth (SBC) AI draft, under review
  • no HDMI ARC and no pre-out — use optical for the TV; it cannot drive an external power amp AI draft, under review
  • USB-stick playback is controlled only through the HEOS app AI draft, under review
  • gives way to the Leak Stereo 230 in speaker control — for demanding floorstanders look at the PMA-1700NE AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • HEOS streaming platform

What it is: HEOS network module (Wi-Fi/Ethernet) with Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, internet radio and music on network devices; AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready certification.

Practical benefit: One box instead of amp plus streamer; Russian services are not in HEOS — use AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth.

  • AHC — Advanced High Current amplification

    What it is: Output stages on high-current transistors: 2 × 50 W (8 Ω) and 2 × 85 W (4 Ω), current ratio 1.7.

Practical benefit: “Confident work into difficult loads”; Audiomania's test: copes easily with Arslab Stereo Two, MA Bronze 5, ELAC Debut F6.2 floorstanders.

  • MM/MC phono stage

What it is: Input for MM (2.5 mV / 47 kΩ) and MC (0.2 mV / 100 Ω) cartridges.

Practical benefit: Any turntable connects directly, no external phono stage needed.

  • SLDS and separate power windings

What it is: Level-separated signal routing on the PCB (SLDS), separate transformer windings for analogue and digital circuits, electronic volume control.

Practical benefit: Less crosstalk and noise; precise volume setting.

  • Source Direct and digital-section off

What it is: “Direct signal path” bypassing the ±8 dB tone controls, and a mode that switches the digital circuits off.

Practical benefit: The shortest path for vinyl and analogue sources; tone controls remain for quiet-listening correction.

  • Digital inputs and Hi-Res

What it is: Three optical and one coaxial input; PCM up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD 5.6 MHz over network/USB; Hi-Res Audio certified.

Practical benefit: TV, CD transport and set-top box connect without an external DAC; no HDMI ARC — use optical for the TV.

  • Voice assistants and Bluetooth

What it is: Control via Amazon Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant; Bluetooth receiver.

Practical benefit: Bluetooth is the only route from an Android phone for Russian services.

FAQ

›Is Chromecast supported? How do I send audio over Wi-Fi from Android?
No: “Chromecast is not supported” (specialist). From Android over Wi-Fi only the HEOS app works — “foreign services only” plus LAN files; from iPhone/iPad — AirPlay 2; from any phone — Bluetooth.
›Can I play Yandex Music or VK Music?
Not natively: HEOS carries foreign services only. Working routes are AirPlay 2 from Apple devices and Bluetooth (SBC) from Android; internet radio (TuneIn) is built in. AI draft, under review
›Why won't it play USB-stick files without the app?
By design: “playback is controlled through HEOS” — the stick is seen and controlled only from the HEOS app (specialist, Nov 2025).
›Is it worth upgrading from the PMA-600HNE (or PMA-700AE)?
Versus the 600HNE: “a bit cleaner and more dynamic”, plus power and networking (specialist, Jan 2026). Versus a PMA-700AE with an external DAC: “more functional; the sound improves, but not dramatically” (Feb 2024). The volume knob is plastic.
›How does it differ from the Denon DRA-800H receiver?
“The sound is very similar” — Audiomania's test found no difference in sound quality. The DRA-800H adds HDMI, a second zone and twice the power; the PMA-900HNE has an MM/MC phono stage and a pure-music focus. For music from an iPhone the specialist picks the PMA-900HNE.
›Will I hear a difference compared with an AV receiver?
Yes: “with the stereo amp the sound is tighter, more detailed, more alive” (vs Denon AVR-X1100W); “it will definitely improve, audibly” (vs Yamaha RX-V681, 12 m²). The exception is the DRA-800H, which sounds “very similar”.
›Which speakers suit the PMA-900HNE?
20 m², electronic/jazz/classical — Arslab Classic 1.5; 20 m², all genres — ELAC Debut Reference DBR62; 35 m², jazz/soul/rock — Radiotehnika Gamma 3.02; a step up — ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UFR52 (“a wonderful match”). Tested: Arslab Stereo Two, MA Bronze 5, ELAC Debut F6.2. For “air” — a ribbon tweeter.
›Can I bi-wire the speakers, and which cable?
Yes — the specialist linked the Denon manual page with the wiring diagram and advised a four-conductor cable. For cables the specialists twice named Cold Ray Loudspeaker Line CU (“neutral, matches most components”).
›Will it stay detailed at low volume?
Specialist: “good detail at low volume needs power reserve and speaker control”, plus a ribbon tweeter helps. The PMA-900HNE has ±8 dB tone controls for quiet listening; there is no loudness. For quiet listening the specialists also noted the Quad Vena II Play. AI draft, under review
›How well does it control speakers and how does it sound?
“Controls speakers better” (than the IOTAVX MA3), “more dynamic with powerful bass”. But against the Leak Stereo 230 it “gives way”; that league needs the PMA-1700NE. In character the Rotel A14 MK2 is “softer” and the Cambridge CXA81 “more even and detailed”.
›Which optical cable for the TV?
For 1.5 m the specialist named the Van den Hul Optocoupler MK II. The TV goes into one of the three optical inputs; there is no HDMI ARC.
›Can I connect a centre channel?
No: a stereo amplifier drives two channels; multichannel cinema needs an AV receiver.

Audiomania expert opinion

Audiomania specialists tested the PMA-900HNE and found it a sonic twin of the DRA-800H receiver: the difference is the network side, and it “copes easily” with Arslab Stereo Two, Monitor Audio Bronze 5 and ELAC Debut F6.2 floorstanders. AI draft, under review[2]

The character is “more dynamic with powerful bass” with “a slight treble colouration”; for rock and pop the specialist picks the Denon, for jazz, soul and classical the more even Cambridge CXA81. Proven pairings: Radiotehnika Gamma 3.02, ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UFR52, Arslab Classic 1.5. AI draft, under review[5]
