Audiomania expert verdict

A retro 45/65 W class A/B integrated built on Quad Vena II architecture with an ES9018K2M DAC, aptX Bluetooth and an MM input. Soft, balanced delivery — for bookshelf and small floorstanding speakers in 12–22 m² with neutral or slightly warm partners; not for soft speakers, big rooms or loud metal. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • golden-era vintage design — wooden sleeve, aluminium fascia, 302 mm wide: “not just an amp but an interior piece” AI draft, under review
  • a soft, balanced delivery for long sessions — with neutral or slightly warm speakers (ELAC Carina, Gamma 3.02, DALI Opticon 2 MK2) AI draft, under review
  • an ES9018K2M DAC with USB-B (24/384, DSD256), two optical and one coaxial input — “analogue purity” from a CD transport or PC AI draft, under review
  • headphones — even 600 Ω AKGs are “driven confidently, no hint of sibilance” AI draft, under review
  • bookshelf speakers and small floorstanders in 12–22 m², triggers and Pre Out to grow the system AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • “softness with softness is inexpressive”: do not pair with soft speakers (Wharfedale Evo 4.4) and expect no reserve for 35 m² AI draft, under review
  • for a midrange focus the specialist preferred the Rotel A14 MKII / A11 MKII or IOTAVX MA3 AI draft, under review
  • the built-in MM phono stage is noisy per an owner (“hiss and crackle in the highs”) — use an external one for vinyl AI draft, under review
  • runs noticeably warm above the grille — nothing on top AI draft, under review

08

Sound character

The character is soft and balanced: the specialist speaks of “the amplifier's softness”, owners of “a balanced, pleasant sound” and no “sibilance or shoutiness” in headphones. AI draft, under review[3]

Bass is a strength for 45 W: “drives the bass excellently, even too much” with Mission 700, “keeps the big Linton bookshelves under control”; versus the Quad Vena II “the bass is a bit deeper”. AI draft, under review[3]

Midrange and detail are not its forte: for “good midrange articulation” the specialist points to the Rotel A14 MKII, IOTAVX MA3 or Rotel A11 MKII. Detail comes from neutral partners (ELAC Carina, Gamma 3.02); after “prickly” ELACs at an audition a buyer preferred the warmer DALI. AI draft, under review[5]

Technologies and construction

  • Leak vintage design

What it is: Wooden sleeve, aluminium fascia with symmetrical controls, 302 mm wide — narrower than today's standard.

Practical benefit: “Not just an amp but an interior piece”; “made with soul… metal knobs”; the brand returned after almost 40 years (Stereo.ru).

  • Class A/B with a toroidal transformer

    What it is: 2 × 45 W (8 Ω), 2 × 65 W (4 Ω); low-noise toroidal transformer; circuitry related to the Quad Vena II.

Practical benefit: Enough for bookshelf and small floorstanders: “keeps the big Lintons under control”; for 35 m² — “a bit weak”.

  • Motorised volume, relays, tone and balance

What it is: Motorised analogue volume, relay input selection, bass/treble with bypass and stereo balance.

Practical benefit: Remote included; tone controls can be bypassed — an owner “trims” excess bass with them.

  • ES9018K2M DAC with USB-B, optical and coaxial

What it is: Two optical, one coaxial and USB-B input; up to 24-bit/384 kHz and DSD256 over USB; optical and coaxial outputs.

Practical benefit: An owner with a Marantz CD6007 transport over coax: “analogue purity and detail”. With the Leak CDT the specialist still suggests an external DAC.

  • Bluetooth 5.0 aptX / AAC

What it is: Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and AAC codecs.

Practical benefit: Owner: in practice the amp negotiates aptX HD — “a big extra plus”.

  • MM phono input

What it is: MM cartridge input, 4.1 mV sensitivity.

Practical benefit: Owner: “a lot of hiss and crackle in the highs” — advises an external phono stage for vinyl.

  • Pre Out, triggers, headphones and special terminals

What it is: Variable PreOut for a power amp or sub, trigger in/out, front headphone jack, “unusual but very convenient” speaker terminals.

Practical benefit: The headphone amp “drives 600 Ω AKGs confidently”; Pre Out feeds a headphone amp or power amp without disconnecting the speakers.

FAQ

›Which speakers for 18–20 m², rock and metal?
“The best option is the ELAC Carina BS 243.4 — it copes with difficult genres such as metal and classical… opens up in 18–20 m²”. The Wharfedale Linton “suits classic rock and jazz more”. Floorstanding — Radiotehnika Gamma 3.02. A subwoofer later: “speakers first”.
›Does it suit Wharfedale Evo 4.4 in 35 m² for metal?
No: “the amplifier's softness will combine with the speakers' softness — the sound will be inexpressive; for your room and speakers it is also a bit weak”. The Rotel A14 MKII was recommended instead.
›What is Pre Out for if the speakers cannot be muted? How do I connect a headphone amp?
“The preamp output lets you connect an external power amp that drives the speakers”. For a headphone amp: “the Pre-Out signal goes to the amp; no need to disconnect the speakers”. An active subwoofer connects there too.
›How is its midrange? How does the character compare with the Denon PMA-900HNE?
For “good midrange articulation” the specialist twice advised other amps: Rotel A14 MKII, or within budget IOTAVX MA3 / Rotel A11 MKII. The Leak's character is “softness”; the specialist did not comment on the Denon PMA-900HNE comparison.
›How good is the built-in phono stage?
There is an MM input (4.1 mV), but an owner (May 2026) was disappointed: “a lot of hiss and crackle in the highs — if you buy it for vinyl, get an external phono stage straight away”. Another owner thinks the DAC, phono stage and headphone amp “beat budget solutions”. AI draft, under review
›Is there a remote? Is it really a Quad Vena II with tone controls?
Yes, there is a remote (motorised volume). On the Quad Vena II — “broadly yes; the 130 has slightly deeper bass”; an owner: “Quad Vena 2 circuitry inside, with its own touches”.
›The matching Leak CDT transport or a CD player?
With a transport the amp's own DAC decodes; the specialist: “for quality sound such a pairing needs an external DAC, e.g. ZEN One Signature”, while “a Rotel CD14 MKII player gives a far more detailed, transparent sound with a wider stage”. An owner using a Marantz CD6007 over coax is happy with the built-in DAC.
›Which speakers for 14–20 m² if the DALI Oberon “don't reveal” the amp?
14 m², electronic/jazz/classical quietly — ELAC Carina BS 243.4; if the ELAC treble felt “prickly” — DALI Opticon 2 MK2 (“slightly warm, harmonises well”); Wharfedale Denton 85 — “full midrange, detailed”. 20 m² on a dresser — Old School Monitor. 30 m² — Gamma 3.02 or ELAC DFR52 (front port, nearer the wall).
›Can I use an angled mains adapter, and which USB cable fits?
The AudioQuest IEC-90/2 adapter is “more than justified; it will not affect the amp”. The USB input is type B (A–B cable). If you build up static, touch a metal furniture leg first: “static is harmful to electronics”.
›Can I connect a centre channel?
No: a stereo amplifier drives two channels; multichannel cinema needs an AV receiver.

Audiomania expert opinion

An Audiomania specialist calls the Leak Stereo 130's character “softness” outright and warns that with soft speakers (Wharfedale Evo 4.4) “the sound will be inexpressive”, and for 35 m² it is “a bit weak” — that calls for the Rotel A14 MKII. AI draft, under review[1]

With the right partner it opens up: the ELAC Carina BS 243.4 gives “a spacious, detailed sound” and handles metal and classical in 18–20 m², the “slightly warm” DALI Opticon 2 MK2 “harmonises well”. For vinyl an owner advises an external phono stage; with headphones and the coaxial DAC — “analogue purity and detail”. AI draft, under review[4]
