Audiomania expert verdict

The Radiotehnika Start LP002D is an all-in-one deck for a first encounter with vinyl at minimal cost: belt drive, steel platter, 8.6-inch arm with auto-stop, switchable built-in phono stage, USB digitising and Bluetooth transmission. An Audiomania specialist recommends it precisely for a tight budget or when Bluetooth is critical; if wireless output is not needed, look at the LP002P or a Premiera ALFA. Weak spots: the stock AT3600L and the intrusive Bluetooth search. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • a first turntable out of the box: switchable built-in phono stage, phono cable and mat included, auto-stop — “the best option to start with” AI draft, under review
  • anyone who needs Bluetooth: transmission to wireless speakers and headphones (SBC), including a portable Impulse P1 or JBL Flip AI draft, under review
  • a tight budget: a specialist recommends the LP002D outright “if the budget is limited or Bluetooth is critical” AI draft, under review
  • digitising old records to a PC over USB AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • Bluetooth only transmits (no receiving), switches on by itself and searches for two minutes — the search cannot be disabled; owners complain it hijacks active speakers and the TV AI draft, under review
  • setting the arm and anti-skate needs attention: “the manual is a bit confusing”; the maker’s video helps AI draft, under review
  • the stock AT3600L is the most basic cartridge; specialists suggest an Ortofon OM5E or Audio-Technica VM95E (up to 7 g, from 6.5 g use a scale) AI draft, under review
  • without Bluetooth/USB there are more sound-focused options for the money: the LP002P of the same series or a Premiera ALFA with an AT-95E and heavier chassis AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • Solid MDF chassis on damping feet

What it is: A thick MDF chassis and damping feet — the classic layout of modern hi-fi decks; the whole mechanism sits under the platter.

Practical benefit: Protection from external vibration and a clean look — “looks like pricier models”. AI draft, under review

  • Belt drive, steel platter and bearing

    What it is: A low-noise belt-drive motor with a 33⅓/45 switch, a balanced steel platter on a machined steel bearing; wow & flutter < 0.15 %, speed accuracy ±1 %.

Practical benefit: Quiet running and simple maintenance — “this type of drive is easy to service”. AI draft, under review

  • 8.6″ gimbal-bearing tonearm

What it is: A straight 8.6-inch gimbal arm with tracking-force and anti-skate adjustment, damped cue lift and integrated headshell; an Audio-Technica AT3600L MM comes fitted.

Practical benefit: A solution that “usually appears on higher-class models”; the adjustments allow an OM5E / VM95E (up to 7 g). AI draft, under review

  • Switchable auto-stop

What it is: Auto-stop switches the deck off after the last track; it can be disabled if desired.

Practical benefit: Extends stylus life — no need to watch for the end of a side. AI draft, under review

  • Switchable built-in phono stage

What it is: Gold-plated RCA outputs with a Phono/Line switch: connect to an amplifier’s line input or active speakers, or to an external phono stage.

Practical benefit: With active speakers a specialist recommends exactly this — a higher, better-protected signal, no ground needed. AI draft, under review

  • USB output for digitising and Bluetooth transmitter

What it is: A built-in ADC with USB to record records on a PC and a Bluetooth transmitter (SBC, transmit only) for wireless speakers and headphones.

Practical benefit: This is what sets it apart from the LP002C; the downside — the automatic Bluetooth search cannot be disabled. AI draft, under review

Both Radiotehnika Start LP002D and Audiolab 6000A have a phono stage — try both (LINE → line input or PHONO → PHONO input); an external unit is usually better than either built-in. Never connect the turntable's LINE output to the amp's PHONO input: a double RIAA stage overloads the input and bloats the bass.

  • Never connect the turntable's LINE output to the amp's PHONO input: a double RIAA stage overloads the input and bloats the bass.
  • With an entry-class cartridge an external stage gives little — upgrade the cartridge first (VM95ML / 2M Blue and up), then the stage.

FAQ

›Both the deck and the active speakers (S20NA) have a phono stage — which to use and how to connect?
Specialist: keep the deck’s phono stage (switch to line output) — “the cable carries a higher-voltage signal, better protected from interference. No grounding is needed then”; set the speakers to line too. With PHONO on both, the speakers’ stage works — then ground both ends. An ELAC Debut owner found the same: the deck’s phono stage sounds better.
›How does Bluetooth work and which codecs are supported?
Transmit only (no receiving), SBC codec. On power-up the transmitter looks for a speaker or headphones in pairing mode; if nothing is found within two minutes it switches off and the LED turns red. Pairs with a JBL Flip 6 and Impulse P1; quality is limited to SBC.
›Bluetooth keeps connecting to the speakers/TV by itself — how do I disable the search?
There is no off button (the electronic manual has none either). Specialist: “pair with another device so the deck and speakers forget each other” — it remembers two devices. This did not help one owner; what works for him is switching the speakers’ input ≈5 times, or waiting for the red LED with the speakers off. Another owner reports it hijacking the TV.
›Which cartridge can replace the stock AT3600L?
“An Ortofon OM5E or Audio-Technica VM95E fits perfectly”, 2 g tracking force. The counterweight “suits cartridges up to 7 g” (the manual says 3–6 g); from 6.5 g set the force with a scale (Pro-Ject Measure It E). Buy the cartridge with the deck and the swap is free.
›Is an amplifier needed? Can I connect passive speakers directly?
Not directly to passive speakers: “This deck must be connected to an amplifier or active speakers.” Thanks to the built-in phono stage any line input works; a portable Impulse P1 connects over Bluetooth or a minijack-2RCA cable.
›How does the LP002D differ from the LP002C and LP002P?
“The LP002D additionally has a USB output for digitising and a Bluetooth transmitter.” The LP002P is the same-series version the specialist suggests comparing rivals against when Bluetooth is not needed.
›LP002D or Premiera ALFA?
“If on-board Bluetooth does not matter, better compare the Premiera ALFA with the Start LP002P. The ALFA comes with an Audio-Technica AT-95E, its chassis is heavier and resists vibration better. If the budget is limited or Bluetooth is critical, the LP002D is an excellent choice.” If you want auto-stop and sound rather than BT/USB/phono — “the Premiera ALFA is an excellent choice”.
›Is it hard to set up?
You set tracking force and anti-skate (the arm has both adjustments). An owner: “Takes a little figuring out… the manual is a bit confusing. The maker’s site has a clear video guide.” The store on Elektrozavodskaya can run the deck in the demo room.
›What is the distance between the feet and the size?
Feet spacing — 20.5 cm (specialist); 418 × 123 × 346 mm (W×H×D), 6.1 kg.
›Is it compatible with a Yandex Station (Alice)?
Specialist: “We have not had a chance to test it.” The deck only transmits over Bluetooth (SBC), so the speaker must be able to receive Bluetooth audio in pairing mode.

Audiomania expert opinion

An Audiomania specialist on positioning: “If on-board Bluetooth does not matter, better compare the Premiera ALFA with the Radiotehnika Start LP002P … If the budget is limited or Bluetooth is critical, the Radiotehnika LP002D is an excellent choice.” It differs from the LP002C only by the USB output and Bluetooth transmitter. AI draft, under review[3]

On connecting to active speakers with their own phono stage (S20NA, ELAC Debut) a specialist advises keeping the deck’s phono stage on: “the cable carries a higher-voltage signal that is better protected from interference”, and no ground is needed then; an ELAC owner reached the same conclusion by trial.
