Audiomania expert verdict

The AT-LP120X USB is the most trouble-free direct-drive deck under 55k: switchable built-in phono stage, USB digitising, three speeds with pitch and strobe, a removable headshell and a wide choice of upgrade cartridges. Audiomania specialists say it has no rivals at its price, yet are open about the compromises: plastic body, no arm-height adjustment or auto-stop, and the rumble of a budget direct drive — it trails a Rega in stage depth. Best first step: a VMN95ML/SH stylus. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • an all-in-one first turntable: switchable built-in phono stage, USB digitising, cable with ground in the box — connects to any amplifier, AV receiver or active speakers AI draft, under review
  • anyone who wants belt-free direct drive, 78 rpm, pitch control and a strobe (DJ features, shellac) AI draft, under review
  • gradual upgrades: removable headshell, all Audio-Technica cartridges, Sumiko Oyster, Nagaoka; VMN95ML/SH styli — “a gain in sound is guaranteed” AI draft, under review
  • systems up to ~$2–3k in total: owners call it “the ideal price/quality bar”, a specialist says it “has no rivals” at its price AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • no auto-stop or auto-return: at the end of a side the stylus stays on the spinning record — lift the arm with the cue lever AI draft, under review
  • no arm-height adjustment: slipmat no thicker than 2–3 mm, cartridges of the same height as the VM95 (Ortofon 2M is ~1.5 mm taller) AI draft, under review
  • plastic body, lighter chassis: specialists say plainly “this is not a Technics” — a budget direct drive has rumble that “kills stage depth” AI draft, under review
  • the stock VM95E is an entry-level cartridge; “the only thing our customers recommend is a cartridge change”; many replace the stock felt mat AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • High-torque DC direct drive

What it is: A DC motor with over 1 kgf·cm starting torque drives the cast aluminium platter directly; electronic brake, three push-button speeds 33/45/78.

Practical benefit: Instant start/stop and speed change, no belt to replace; an owner: “zero wow”. The flip side is budget direct-drive rumble that specialists warn about. AI draft, under review

  • ±8/±16 % pitch control and strobe

What it is: A pitch fader with quartz-lock button and ±8 or ±16 % range; a strobe lamp and platter markings to check speed.

Practical benefit: DJ features (scratching, mixing) and precise speed trimming for 78 rpm shellac collectors. AI draft, under review

  • S-shaped tonearm with removable AT-HS6 headshell

What it is: A statically balanced S-arm (230.5 mm, 16 mm overhang) with adjustable anti-skate and hydraulic cue; a 9 g removable headshell for 3.5–8.5 g cartridges; no height adjustment.

Practical benefit: A wide choice of upgrade cartridges (all AT, Sumiko Oyster, Nagaoka) and easy setup — “anti-skate is no bother”; cartridge height must match the VM95. AI draft, under review

  • Switchable built-in phono stage

What it is: An RIAA board with 36 dB gain (PHONO 4 mV → LINE 240 mV) and a PHONO/LINE slide switch on the rear.

Practical benefit: Connects to any line input and to active speakers; “quite good” — about the level of amplifier built-ins, and can be bypassed for an external unit. AI draft, under review

  • USB output with ADC for digitising

What it is: A built-in 16-bit ADC at 44.1 or 48 kHz over USB 1.1 (Windows 7+, macOS); record with Audacity or other software.

Practical benefit: Moves a collection to a computer without a separate ADC — some buyers get it precisely for digitising; some owners find the feature superfluous. AI draft, under review

  • Damped chassis, adjustable feet, external PSU

What it is: A damped plastic body on height-adjustable feet; the 12 V / 3 A power supply is external; a stylus target light.

Practical benefit: Less mains noise in the chain and the ability to level the deck — otherwise “anti-skate starts working incorrectly”; owners note the plinth damps vibration but the deck is “a bit light”. AI draft, under review

Both Audio-Technica AT-LP120X USB and Audiolab 6000A have a phono stage — try both (LINE → line input or PHONO → PHONO input); an external unit is usually better than either built-in. Never connect the turntable's LINE output to the amp's PHONO input: a double RIAA stage overloads the input and bloats the bass.

  • Never connect the turntable's LINE output to the amp's PHONO input: a double RIAA stage overloads the input and bloats the bass.
  • With an entry-class cartridge an external stage gives little — upgrade the cartridge first (VM95ML / 2M Blue and up), then the stage.

FAQ

›Quiet sound or no bass — how to connect it properly?
Usually the rear switch is in the wrong position. Using the deck’s phono stage — set LINE and use any line input of the amp/receiver/active speakers (not PHONO, no ground). Using the amplifier’s phono stage — set PHONO, use the PHONO input and the ground wire.
›Which cartridge or stylus should replace the stock VM95E?
Easiest step — a VMN95ML or VMN95SH stylus: “a gain in sound is guaranteed”, VMN95SH is “the best solution”. Cartridges: any Audio-Technica (VM530EN — also for heavy styles, VM540ML/H — “best choice for home”), Sumiko Oyster, Nagaoka; Ortofon 2M fits the mount but sits ~1.5 mm taller (no height adjustment). Cartridge mass ≤ 8.5 g (≈18 g with the AT-HS6 shell). With a higher-class cartridge add an external phono stage.
›Which slipmat can replace the felt one?
The stock felt mat is 2.5 mm. A replacement should be no thicker than 2–3 mm: “there is no arm-height adjustment”, otherwise the arm is not parallel to the record. Specialists suggest 2.5 mm leather, the Radiotehnika LPA015 Nubuck (“less static, tighter sound”), Audio Anatomy Cork Nitrile; 0.5–1 mm off the stock thickness is not critical. 1.2 kg brass and 6 mm mats are not recommended.
›Which record clamp can be used?
Specialists disagree: one advises “clamps up to 200–250 g” (600 g overloads the bearing), another considers ~400 g (Analog Renaissance Mjollnir) an average weight that “will not overload”. Until the panel rules, stay with light clamps.
›Is there auto-stop? What happens at the end of a record?
No: “no auto-stop means no arm return. After playback the stylus stays on the record, which keeps spinning” — lift the arm with the cue lever; a short while in the run-out groove does no harm. There is no direct-drive deck with auto-stop in this class (simpler — AT-LP3XBT, pricier — Technics SL-1500C).
›Built-in phono stage, external, or the amplifier’s?
The built-in one is “quite good” and roughly equal to amplifiers’ and receivers’ built-ins — owners notice “no global difference”. “Expect the gain from an external unit”: a Radiotehnika PH001 “raises detail, adds space and depth”; then Rega Fono Mini A2D, Pro-Ject Phono Box S2, iFi ZEN Phono, Cambridge Solo. An external stage makes most sense once the cartridge goes up a class.
›AT-LP120X or Rega Planar 1 / Planar 3?
On sound specialists side with Rega: the Planar 1 (Plus) is “denser, more dynamic and detail-focused”, and the Planar 3 “plays better” because of the AT’s budget direct-drive rumble. For features and upgrades — the AT-LP120X: no belt, switchable phono, detachable cable and headshell. A Planar 3 makes sense in systems from $1,500 per component; around 50k specialists also name the TEAC TN-4D, Denon DP-400, Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC/EVO.
›How does it differ from the AT-LP140XP, AT-LP5X, AT-LPW50PB and AT-LP120XBT?
LP140XP: metal top plate, arm-height adjustment, “a noticeably wider range of cartridges”. LP5X: “practically two identical decks”, the LP5 is 2 kg heavier, no pitch or strobe; with the stock cartridge you will not hear a difference. LPW50PB: belt drive, MDF body, carbon arm — “more interesting for home listening”. LP120XBT: the same plus Bluetooth transmission.
›Which active speakers go with the deck?
For 13–17 m² specialists twice named the ELAC Debut ConneX DCB41 (“superb little ones with grown-up sound”; “detailed, transparent sound with excellent space and dynamics”); cheaper — Klipsch R-41PM. Set the switch to LINE; no grounding is needed with active speakers.
›How do I digitise records — is software included?
The USB output gives 16-bit / 44.1 or 48 kHz (USB 1.1, Windows 7+ / macOS). No software disc: “any digitising software available to you” — Audacity or Cockos REAPER. A 1.9 m USB cable is included.
›Is there a ground terminal and when is it needed?
Yes, there is a terminal and the 2RCA cable with a ground lead is included. Ground is needed only into an amplifier’s PHONO input; with active speakers “no grounding is required”. If active speakers have no terminal and you get hum — the ground can go under a rear-panel screw, and move unshielded monitors away from the cartridge.
›Can I use a 5–7 m cable? Is the stock cable worth replacing?
Yes (e.g. Onetech AIN7005 without ground, via the built-in phono stage), “but at that length pickup of interference is possible”. The cable is detachable; owners and specialists suggest replacing it: Phaze Audio Phono ICC RCA (works with either phono stage), Supra Phono 2 RCA-SC.

Audiomania expert opinion

Specialists rate the AT-LP120X soberly: “no rivals in its price class” and “the most trouble-free deck” for a beginner, but “far from a Technics” — a plastic body with no arm-height adjustment, and against a Rega Planar 3 “it is all about the rumble of a budget direct drive”. For home use without DJ features they also suggest the belt-drive AT-LPW50PB. AI draft, under review[6]

On sound in systems: with active ELAC Debut ConneX DCB41 in 13.7 m² — “detailed, transparent sound with excellent space and dynamics”; with an Onkyo TX-8470 and Wharfedale EVO 5.2 — “comfortable listening” without ultra-high standards. The built-in phono stage is “quite good” and roughly equal to amplifiers’ built-ins; an external unit brings the gain. AI draft, under review[5]
