Audiomania expert verdict

A 50 W class A/B integrated tuned by Ken Ishiwata: neutral, detailed, calm sound with a slightly warm tint, an excellent soundstage, an MM phono stage and aptX Bluetooth. The best pick for bookshelf speakers in 12–20 m² at moderate volume; for demanding floorstanders and digital sources see the A14 MK2 and A12. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • a neutral, detailed, calm sound — “correct, precise, detailed, close to monitor-like”, yet with a slightly warm tint AI draft, under review
  • bookshelf and modest floorstanding speakers in 12–20 m², quiet and evening listening (±10 dB tone controls) AI draft, under review
  • vinyl: a built-in MM phono stage (2.3 mV / 47 kΩ) AI draft, under review
  • an analogue system with an upgrade path — Pre Out for an external power amp or a subwoofer AI draft, under review
  • proven pairings: ELAC Debut B6.3 / DBR62, DALI Oberon 1/5, B&W 606, Monitor Audio Bronze, Klipsch RP-5000F AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • no digital inputs or network: PC or TV only over Bluetooth or an external DAC (for digital inputs — Rotel A12) AI draft, under review
  • 50 W into 8 Ω with no 4 Ω rating: demanding floorstanders (JBL Studio 280, ELAC FS197) and loud 35 m² rooms are not its job — see the A14 MK2 or Atoll IN100 AI draft, under review
  • runs warm and is sensitive to overheating — nothing on top, give it breaks during marathon sessions AI draft, under review
  • no bi-amping; the “slight brightness that occasionally slipped through” was removed only in the A11 Mk2 AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • Ken Ishiwata tuning

What it is: All 10 capacitors and two resistors in the output stage, six capacitors in the preamp and all six in the volume control were replaced: over 50 % of the signal-path components.

Practical benefit: Specialist: the Tribute “is felt strikingly compared with the old Rotel A11”; the base A11 is “not as rich or musical”.

  • Class A/B with an enlarged toroidal transformer

What it is: 50 W per channel (8 Ω, THD < 0.03 %), damping factor 140, Rotel's own toroid, outputs for two speaker pairs.

Practical benefit: “Bass control will be higher” (than the Yamaha A-S201); “Rotel is quite honest about its power ratings”.

  • Built-in MM phono stage

What it is: MM phono input 2.3 mV / 47 kΩ; 85 dB S/N on the MM input.

Practical benefit: An MM turntable (Pro-Ject Debut, Audio-Technica) connects directly; “reveals vinyl at a higher level”.

  • Bluetooth aptX / AAC

What it is: Bluetooth receiver with aptX and AAC; a Texas Instruments 24-bit/192 kHz DAC serves this path.

Practical benefit: Owners: “excellent Bluetooth implementation”, “minimal loss”; old phones may stutter — protocol version.

  • ±10 dB tone controls with Tone Bypass

What it is: Bass/treble ±10 dB and a Tone Bypass mode.

Practical benefit: “Tone controls help correct quiet listening”; burn in using the mode you will listen in.

  • Pre Out (1.9 V / 100 Ω)

What it is: A variable preamp output for an external power amp or an active subwoofer.

Practical benefit: “If you want louder later, there is an output for a power amp”; “any active sub with Line In”.

  • Damped chassis, display and IR remote

What it is: Damping materials in the chassis against resonances; a graphic display and IR remote.

Practical benefit: One owner noted a “ringing” top cover and transformer hum on his unit.

FAQ

›Can I connect 4 Ω speakers?
Yes: “it works with 4 Ω speakers without problems”, “works with both 4 Ω and 8 Ω”. Power into 4 Ω is not rated, so the reserve for demanding floorstanders is small — see the floorstander question.
›Is there a subwoofer output?
No dedicated one — the sub connects to Pre Out: “any active subwoofer with Line In inputs”. The specialist suggests a sub from 18 m²; Pre Out follows the amp's volume.
›Can I bi-wire through the A and B terminals? Bi-amp?
Bi-wiring with A+B into one speaker — “quite possible, mind the polarity”; bi-amping — “not available”. Specialists suggested Supra Rondo Bi-Wire 4×2.5 for B&W 606, or a better single cable instead (Van den Hul Snowline, up to 5 m).
›How does the Tribute differ from the A11 Mk2, A12 and A14?
The Mk2 is the next generation: “even more neutral”, deeper bass, more detail, wider stage, without the Tribute's “slight brightness”. The A12 adds USB/coax/optical: “the A11 Tribute's output is cleaner… with digital sources take the 12”. The A11 is “bassier” than its seniors; to drive floorstanders — A14 MK2.
›How long to burn it in — Tone Bypass or tone controls?
“Usually 50 to 100 hours are enough… use the mode you plan to listen in”.
›Is there a DAC? Can I connect a PC or TV?
The DAC (TI 24/192) serves Bluetooth only: “cable connection starts with the A12”. PC — Bluetooth or an external DAC into a line input; TV — “if the TV has a BT transmitter”. Owners add a streamer (WiiM Pro Plus) for optical and Wi-Fi.
›Which speakers suit the A11 Tribute?
18 m², classic rock/blues/jazz — ELAC Debut B6.3 or DALI Oberon 5; 15–16 m² quietly — ELAC DBR62 (“synergy… not harsh”); 13 m², vinyl — DALI Oberon 1; 25 m² — ELAC Debut F5.2; up to 40k ₽ — DBR62, Arslab Classic 1.5. Bright Cantons were sent to the Audiolab 6000A.
›Will it drive floorstanders or a large room?
Easy floorstanders — yes (Triangle Heliade “an easy load”, Yamaha NS-1000M in 20 m², Heco Victa 702 “fine at modest volume”). Demanding ones — no: JBL Studio 280 “a bit heavy”, ELAC FS197 “harder” → Rotel A12/A14 MKII or Atoll IN100. Quietly — up to 18–20 m²; 35 m² only quietly.
›What is the Tribute's character? Is it true Rotels sound bland?
Specialist: “very musical, balanced, neutral and natural… excellent stage visualisation… a slightly warmer tint”. Versus the Denon PMA-600NE — “more detailed and richer”; the base A11 — “not as rich”. Owners: “correct, precise, detailed, closer to monitor-like”. The Arcam SA10 is “more comfortable and softer”.
›Can it replace an AV receiver for films and games?
No surround decoders or HDMI: “it is just a stereo amplifier… for music, and it does that better than an AV receiver”. A home-cinema front needs a ByPass input — absent; the specialist suggested the Atoll IN100 Signature.
›How do I record vinyl to a deck without a line output?
There is no fixed Rec Out, only the variable Pre Out: make test recordings at several volume positions and keep the best level (or set the deck's record level by its meter).
›Can I connect a centre channel?
No: a stereo amplifier drives two channels; multichannel cinema needs an AV receiver.

Audiomania expert opinion

Audiomania specialist: “very musical, balanced, neutral and natural… excellent soundstage visualisation (width, depth, height)… a slightly warmer tint”. Against the Denon PMA-600NE the Tribute “sounds more detailed and richer”; the base A11 is “not as rich or musical”. AI draft, under review[3]

Its element is bookshelf speakers: with the ELAC DBR62 “both detailed and calm… musical, not harsh, yet everything is audible”. The limits are honest: “quietly — up to 18–20 m²”, “a bit heavy” with JBL Studio 280, “harder” with ELAC FS197 floorstanders — that calls for the A14 MK2. AI draft, under review[4]
