Audiomania expert verdict

A compact, affordable bookshelf (133 mm Polyglass, silk tweeter in a horn-waveguide, 88 dB / 4 Ω) for rooms up to 20 m² and desks: it sounds “quite bright and dynamic”, with clean but modest bass (55 Hz). Tolerant of budget amplifiers (Premiera A1, RTM02 v2, Aiyima), but 4 Ω rules out receivers rated “6 Ω and up”. For electronic music add a subwoofer. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • a first hi-fi system in a room up to 20 m² on a minimal budget — “a good option for the money” AI draft, under review
  • desks and small rooms (6–12 m²): a specialist picked it for a desk in 6 m² AI draft, under review
  • background and late-night listening — “fine details are clear… doesn't tire you late at night” AI draft, under review
  • clean, articulate bass on bass guitar and funk — “the picture does not smear” AI draft, under review
  • affordable amplifiers: Premiera A1, RTM02 v2, Aiyima A07 Pro, Denon PMA-520 — “tolerant of most amplifiers” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • 4 Ω: not for receivers rated “6 Ω and up” (Yamaha RX-V4A, Onkyo TX-SR501); for a Yamaha R-S202 the specialist advises 8 Ω speakers AI draft, under review
  • modest bass (55 Hz): “there, but doesn't pump”; one owner needed loudness compensation; for electronic music — add a subwoofer AI draft, under review
  • sounds “quite bright”: brighter on top than the Alfa 1.01; one owner wanted more air up top AI draft, under review
  • a foam plug sits in the port — remove it for normal use; rear port — 30–50 cm from the wall AI draft, under review

Sound character

The S-20N's delivery is “quite bright and dynamic”: brighter on top than the Alfa 1.01, which is “more neutral and softer”. With a neutral amplifier (Technics) the specialist hears “a neutral, balanced sound”. AI draft, under review[3]

Bass is clean but not plentiful: “every note reads… the whole bottom is tight and articulate”, yet “there, but doesn't pump”; one owner needed loudness compensation. Specialist: the Vita 2.04 and DALI Spektor 2 have more bass. AI draft, under review[4]

The midrange is “juicy (but not like on full-range drivers)”; the top — a silk dome in a horn: more detailed than a Microlab Solo 6 or Yamaha NS-6490, but “could use a little more air”. AI draft, under review[3]

At low volume — background and late night — “fine details are clear… doesn't tire you”; dense electronic music is “quite respectable for a bookshelf”, and with a subwoofer “superb”. AI draft, under review[2]

Technologies and construction

  • 133 mm Polyglass woofer on a butyl surround

What it is: A Polyglass cone (glass + paper) — stiff yet light; butyl rubber surround; strong magnet system.

Practical benefit: “The driver's sound stays controlled and clean at high volume” — owner: “the whole bottom is tight and articulate… the picture does not smear”.

  • 25 mm silk tweeter in a horn-waveguide

What it is: A 25 mm silk dome in a small horn-waveguide; neodymium magnet, ferrofluid in the gap.

Practical benefit: The horn “evens out the dispersion… improves the stereo image”; specialists: “more detailed on top” than a Microlab Solo 6, sounds “quite bright”.

  • Rear reflex port with a foam plug

What it is: The port fires from the rear panel and ships with a foam plug inside.

Practical benefit: “Remove the foam” for normal use; against a wall the plug prevents boom — “even with the holes closed the bass sounds good”.

  • Damped MDF cabinet, grille on fixings

What it is: A damped MDF cabinet; acoustically transparent grille on fixings (not magnetic).

Practical benefit: Solid build — owners: “assembled quite sturdily”; a caveat: the grille cloth is loosely stretched.

  • Crossover with minimal phase distortion

What it is: The crossover is designed for precise driver matching and minimal phase distortion.

Practical benefit: Coherent bands — owner: “overall… sounds balanced and tight”.

FAQ

›The speakers are 4 Ω — will they work with my receiver (Yamaha RX-V4A, Onkyo TX-SR501) or a 6–8 Ω amplifier?
Receivers rated “6 Ω and up” — no: “the minimum impedance… must be 6 Ω. The S-20N is 4 Ω” (Yamaha RX-V4A); “your Onkyo only works with speakers above 6 Ω”. For a Yamaha R-S202 “better pick 8 Ω speakers”. Amplifiers rated for 4 Ω (Premiera A1, Pioneer A-303R, Technics SU-V620, Aiyima TPA3255) are fine.
›There is foam in the port — a shipping plug, or do I listen with it in?
“It is a port plug. Remove the foam” (specialist). Put it back if the speakers must sit against the wall and the bass booms: one owner writes that “even with the holes at the back closed the bass sounds good”.
›Which amplifier should I buy? Do I need one at all if my turntable has a phono stage?
You do need an amplifier: “the Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT has a built-in phono stage”, but without an amplifier only the active S-20NA will play. Specialists name the Radiotehnika RTM02 v2 (three times) and the Premiera A1: “pairs excellently tonally”, “good dynamics, balance”.
›Which cable — 1.5 or 2.5 mm² — and is it included?
“A 2.5 mm² cable is fine… bought separately”; “no cable in the box. Connect by clamping bare wire in the terminals or with connectors, usually bananas”. By rule for 4 Ω: 2.5 mm² up to 5 m, 4 mm² beyond. The specialist suggests the Radiotehnika Volna SPR2.5T.
›Do I need a subwoofer?
By rule (55 Hz, −3 dB): optional for music, recommended for cinema; crossover ≈ 70 Hz. Specialist: “a subwoofer is advisable”; for techno “with an active subwoofer, e.g. the Radiotehnika Alfa 1.04 — superb”. Owners of background systems do without.
›How do they sound — describe the character?
Specialist: “the speakers sound quite bright and dynamic”; vs the Alfa 1.01 — “brighter on top, slightly less bass”. With a Technics — “a neutral, balanced sound”. Owner: “the whole bottom is tight and articulate… juicy midrange… could use a little more air on top”.
›How does it differ from the Radiotehnika Alfa 1.01 and Vita 2.04?
Alfa 1.01: a smaller box and “slightly more modest bass”, but “more neutral and softer in delivery”; the S-20N is brighter on top. The Vita 2.04 (8 Ω) is a step up: “definitely more detailed and bassier”, “a flatter midrange, textured bass, clean treble”.
›Can I hang them on a wall or bracket? How close to the wall?
No: “not intended by the manufacturer for wall or bracket mounting”, “no mounting points”. Rear port — by rule 30–50 cm from the wall (20 minimum); closer — with the foam plug. A specialist approved a desk in 6 m² at 30 cm from the wall.
›What is the power rating — total and per speaker?
“Recommended power handling 40 / 90 W (peak) per channel, i.e. 40 W × 2 channels” (specialist). That is power handling, not an amplifier requirement: by rule, 100 dB peaks at 3 m in 20 m² need ≈ 70 W into 4 Ω; for background listening and small rooms 20–30 W is enough.
›S-20N, KEF Q150 or Klipsch R-40M for 12 m² (rock, pop, jazz, 20 cm from the wall)?
Specialist: “I recommend the Radiotehnika S-20N. You get a more balanced and detailed sound”.
›Does it need an amplifier?
Yes: these are passive speakers and need a stereo amplifier or receiver. See “Amplifier requirements” and “Recommended now”.

Aiyima A07 Pro.

Audiomania expert opinion

The S-20N is Radiotehnika's most affordable bookshelf, and Audiomania specialists regularly pick it in the budget class: “of the rest, the best choice is the Radiotehnika S-20N” (vs Premiera DS-501 and Mission QX-1), “a more balanced and detailed sound” (vs KEF Q150 and Klipsch R-40M in 12 m²). AI draft, under review[2]

The character is “quite bright and dynamic”, with a Technics “neutral and balanced”. The next step within the brand is the Vita 2.04 (8 Ω): “definitely more detailed and bassier”, “a flatter midrange, textured bass, clean treble”. AI draft, under review[4]
