Audiomania expert verdict

The most compact Q-series bookshelf with a coaxial Uni-Q (130 mm + 25 mm, aluminium): an even, neutral, “musical” sound for small rooms and shelves — the included plugs let it sit close to a wall. Bass is tidy but “the floor is high” (51 Hz): for electronic music add a subwoofer, for depth take the Q350. 86 dB / 8 Ω: an easy load, but loud listening needs 60 W or more. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • small rooms of 10–18 m² and shelves: “the most compact model in the series”, with the plugs “really onto a shelf” AI draft, under review
  • an even, neutral sound “for almost all styles” — “a very pleasant flat spectrum” AI draft, under review
  • affordable and older 8 Ω amplifiers: Rotel A10 MK2, Pioneer A-40AE, TEAC AI-101DA — “fit without problems” AI draft, under review
  • neighbours and apartment blocks: tidy bass, “absolutely no boom”, plugs included AI draft, under review
  • electronic music and rock with a subwoofer — “that is how bass control is achieved” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • “their bass floor is high” (51 Hz): for deep bass — the Q350, ELAC DBR62 or a subwoofer AI draft, under review
  • rear port: 30–50 cm from the wall; closer — with the foam plugs (−2 dB at the bottom) AI draft, under review
  • ships without grilles — they are an option AI draft, under review
  • 86 dB: loud listening in 20 m² needs 60 W or more; at quiet levels the specialist expects less AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • Uni-Q coaxial driver (130 mm + 25 mm, aluminium)

What it is: A 130 mm ribbed aluminium woofer with a 25 mm aluminium tweeter and tangerine waveguide at its centre, on a common chassis with matched magnet systems.

Practical benefit: “The coherence of a single full-range driver” with the bandwidth of a two-way — owner: “clean highs and a tidy midrange”.

  • CFD rear port and foam plugs

What it is: A rear-panel reflex port with a CFD profile (smooth airflow); foam plugs are supplied.

Practical benefit: “Very low port noise”; the plugs “turn reflex into sealed, dropping the very bottom by a couple of dB” — so they can sit closer to a wall.

  • 2.5 kHz crossover from selected components

What it is: The crossover is set at 2.5 kHz.

Practical benefit: An even response — “a very pleasant flat spectrum” (owner).

  • Damped MDF cabinet, three finishes

What it is: A damped MDF cabinet; black, white or walnut finishes; the logo on the top edge of the baffle.

Practical benefit: Compact: “easy to find a place for in the interior”; “build quality is simply superb” (owner).

FAQ

›Which amplifier fits — Rotel A10 MK2, Pioneer A-40AE, an old Rotel RA-01?
All three approved by specialists: Rotel A10 MK2 — “no technical objections, fits without problems” (16 m²); Pioneer A-40AE — “a good pairing”; Rotel RA-01 — “quite a workable set… the sound will be neutral”, but no remote. For a quality step up the Audiolab 6000A Play was suggested.
›Can I put them on a TV shelf or cabinet 20 cm from the wall?
Yes: with a Rotel A10 MK2 on a cabinet at 20 cm they “fit without problems”. The rear port asks for 30–50 cm by rule; closer — insert the supplied foam plugs: “lets you put the bookshelves really onto a shelf”, “helped to reduce low-frequency resonances”. For full performance the maker recommends stands.
›Is there enough bass for electronic music and rock? Do I need a subwoofer?
Specialist: “their bass floor is high”; “quite fine for electronic music”; with a subwoofer “the KEF Q150 can be used — that is how bass control is achieved”. By rule (51 Hz, −3 dB): a sub is optional for music, recommended for cinema; crossover ≈ 65 Hz. More bass without a sub — the Q350 or ELAC DBR62.
›KEF Q150 or ELAC Debut B5.2 / DBR62?
“ELAC is tighter and more detailed, more universal across genres” (on the B5.2). For jazz “the ELAC Debut Reference DBR62 is more interesting — more multi-genre”, also “bassier” and with a front port “not critical to placement”. The Q150 is “more musical” (vs the Monitor Audio Bronze 6G).
›Q150 or Q350 for 20 m² (rock, Yamaha A-S1100, with a sub)?
“The KEF Q350 will sound more balanced and fuller in the lows”; “with a sub in the system the Q150 can be used — that is how bass control is achieved”. The ELAC Debut B6.2 with a front port was also suggested.
›Are grilles included?
No: “ships without speaker grilles (available as an optional extra)”. Foam port plugs are in the box.
›I listen quietly in 15 m² — will they suit?
Specialist (on an old Rotel RA-01): “the sound will be neutral, but not at a low volume level” — at quiet levels the 86 dB Q150 opens up less; the Audiolab 6000A Play was suggested as an upgrade. One owner listens at background level in 18 m² without complaints.
›Which stands?
By rule 72–82 cm (coaxial tweeter at 95–105 cm seated): the Radiotehnika T7 (77 cm) fits; top plate from 11 × 17 cm. Maker: “recommended on dedicated stands or heavy, non-resonant furniture”.
›Does it need an amplifier?
Yes: these are passive speakers and need a stereo amplifier or receiver. See “Amplifier requirements” and “Recommended now”.

Audiomania expert opinion

The Q150 is the classic “first KEF”: the coaxial Uni-Q gives single-driver coherence, and owners hear “a very pleasant flat spectrum” and “clean highs and a tidy midrange”. Specialists call it “more musical” than the Monitor Audio Bronze 6G and happily pair it with a Rotel A10 MK2 or Pioneer A-40AE. AI draft, under review[5]

Honest limits: “the bass floor is high”, so for loud electronic music in 18 m² the specialist suggested the ELAC Carina, for jazz the ELAC DBR62 as “more multi-genre”, and in 12 m² preferred the Radiotehnika S-20N. The Q150 is strong as a neutral compact bookshelf, not as a bass machine. AI draft, under review[4]
