Audiomania expert verdict

A Danish bookshelf with a 6.5-inch SMC woofer and a 29 mm soft dome: a soft, warm, “beautiful” delivery with DALI's signature detail — for vocals, jazz, rock and cinema in 9–20 m², especially with Marantz/Denon or a Rotel A11 Tribute. 4 Ω and 86.5 dB demand an amplifier rated for 4 Ω with power to spare; 59 Hz bass — add a subwoofer. For “sterile” detail and metal, look at the ELAC Solano. AI draft, under review

In brief

Best if you are looking for:

  • a “beautiful”, soft, warm sound — for vocals, jazz and rock without fatigue AI draft, under review
  • pairings with Marantz, Denon, Rotel A11 Tribute, Cambridge CXA61 — “with Marantz, DALI are the most in tune”, an owner: “the best there can be” AI draft, under review
  • stereo + cinema in 9–20 m² with a Marantz/Denon AV receiver (rated for 4 Ω) and a subwoofer AI draft, under review
  • quiet evening listening and small rooms: 9 m² at low volume — “an excellent fit” AI draft, under review
  • an upgrade from the Oberon 3 / original Opticon 2: “a denser, tighter bottom”, “sound radically better” AI draft, under review

Keep in mind:

  • 4 Ω and 86.5 dB — a hard drive: by rule ≈ 100 W into 4 Ω for 100 dB in 20 m²; an amplifier/receiver rated for 4 Ω is a must AI draft, under review
  • bass is not deep (59 Hz): a subwoofer is recommended for music and “of course” for cinema AI draft, under review
  • for maximum detail and metal specialists prefer the ELAC Solano/Carina (“30 % more detailed”) AI draft, under review
  • rear port: “two port diameters” from the wall; “if it booms — plug it with foam” AI draft, under review

Technologies and construction

  • 6.5-inch wood-fibre woofer with an SMC magnet system

What it is: A pressed wood-fibre cone on a rubber surround and a cast aluminium basket; an SMC composite ring in the magnet system.

Practical benefit: SMC “evens out the field, voice-coil movement becomes more precise and smooth” — specialist: “a denser, tighter bottom” than the Oberon 3.

  • 29 mm fabric dome in a round waveguide

What it is: A 29 mm soft fabric dome (as in the Callisto C) in a small round waveguide.

Practical benefit: The waveguide “evens out the dispersion” — specialist: highs “not hissy”, delivery “softer”.

  • Dual Flare rear port (46 Hz)

What it is: A Dual Flare reflex port on the rear panel, tuned to 46 Hz.

Practical benefit: “Works quietly and efficiently” (description); the specialist still advises two port diameters from the wall and foam “if it booms”.

  • 25 mm baffle, matched pairs made in Denmark

What it is: Damped MDF with a 25 mm baffle; a crossover of selected components; matched pairs assembled in Denmark; three finishes.

Practical benefit: “Vibration protection even at high listening levels” (description).

FAQ

›Which amplifier — strong enough for rock but not fatiguing on female vocals?
Specialist: “I recommend the Rotel A11 Tribute. It will sound excellent with the DALI Opticon 2 MK2”. Other approved pairings: Cambridge Audio CXA61 (+ CXN v2), Marantz — “the most in tune” (an owner with a PM8006: “the best there can be”), Denon, Roksan, Atoll, Yamaha from the 1200 series, tubes. A 4 Ω rating is a must.
›Will they work with a Denon AVR-X1600H / Marantz SR5015 receiver in 9–20 m²?
Yes, in the specialists' experience: 13 m² with an AVR-X1600H — “an excellent fit”; 9 m², quiet, 80 % cinema — “an excellent fit”; 20 m² with a Marantz SR5015 (cinema + everything but heavy metal) — “a good choice”. By rule 4 Ω is formally below the 6 Ω receiver threshold — make sure your receiver allows 4 Ω (Denon/Marantz do).
›Is it worth replacing DALI Oberon 3 with the Opticon 2 MK2 (lacking dense bass and detail)?
“With the Opticon 2 MK2 you get a denser, tighter bottom and a more informative midrange”; “a gain in detail and scale”. But for rock the specialist finds the ELAC Carina BS 243.4 “a far more interesting solution”: “even more detail, transparency… with better bass control”.
›Should I swap the Opticon 1 MK2 for the Opticon 2 MK2? What is the difference?
“The cardinal difference is the amount of bass. And how loud you listen”. To an Opticon 1 owner with a subwoofer and a Rotel 1572: “a similar character… I see no point in swapping”; for a “natural, detailed midrange” — the ELAC Solano BS 283.2.
›Can I put them right against the wall?
Specialist: “ideally the distance to the wall should equal two port diameters. If that is impossible — trial and error. If it booms, you can always plug the port with foam”. By rule for a rear port — 30–50 cm (20 minimum). The description claims the Dual Flare port tolerates walls — check by ear.
›DALI Opticon 2 MK2 or ELAC Solano BS 283 — which sounds “prettier”?
“Both sound beautiful, but differently… and their amplifier requirements differ a lot”. The Solano is “30 % more detailed”, ideal with “sterile” amplifiers (Rotel, Arcam, Plinius), for metal and complex electronic music. DALI — a “warm (coloured)” sound with Denon/Marantz/Yamaha/tubes; “if your gear is Marantz — DALI will be the most in tune”.
›What is the difference from the first Opticon 2, and is the premium worth it?
“The Opticon 2 MK2 is the new version… built on different components and drivers. The look changed (matte design). In sound they give a bit more bass than the old range while keeping DALI's signature detail and brightness”. “Yes, worth it. They sound radically better”.
›Do I need a subwoofer?
By rule (59 Hz, −3 dB, bass 4/10): recommended for music, required for cinema; crossover ≈ 75 Hz. Description: as cinema fronts “of course with proper subwoofer support”. Real owners in the thread use a B&W ASW608 and an ELAC 2030.
›Does it need an amplifier?
Yes: these are passive speakers and need a stereo amplifier or receiver. See “Amplifier requirements” and “Recommended now”.

Audiomania expert opinion

The Opticon 2 MK2 is a speaker with character: “a softer delivery” (vs the Arslab Classic 1.5), a “warm (coloured) sound” that specialists deliberately pair with amplifiers “of the same group” — Denon, Marantz, Roksan, Atoll, Yamaha from the 1200 series and tubes. An owner after all his experiments: with a Marantz PM8006 — “the best there can be”. AI draft, under review[4]

Within the range it is an upgrade: “a bit more bass” and “radically better” than the first Opticon 2, “a denser, tighter bottom and a more informative midrange” than the Oberon 3. But if you need a “detailed midrange”, transparency and metal — specialists honestly point to the ELAC Solano BS 283 (“30 % more detailed”) and Carina. AI draft, under review[6]
